Camden Labour Council are carrying out the same cuts and social cleansing policy as Brent, with nearly 3,000 people being forced to move to Bradford and other areas outside of London. (http://www.lbc.co.uk/welfare-reform-may-force-3000-camden-residents-to-bradford-67433). TUSC have been supporting the Counihan-Sanchez Housing Campaign in Brent which campaigns for Councils to stop evicting families and implementing cuts, and to start building genuinely affordable housing.
Working class people need an alternative to the austerity policies of the main parties, and to cut across the racism of the far-right that seeks to divide working people, which only plays into the hands of the bosses and their drive to roll back our hard won rights and conditions.
John Reid will be standing on a clear anti-cuts platform and in favour of a council budget to meet the needs of ordinary people. Camden have millions of pounds of reserves which they could use, at least initially, to stop the cuts. Ultimately, however, we need to build a mass campaign amongst the public, Trade Unions and community groups to fight central government for the funds that we desperately need.
We are calling on all community activists, socialists and trade unionists in NW London to rally round John Reid and TUSC. All those who are interested in supporting the campaign over the next three weeks, please e-mail John jpjreidie[at]yahoo[dot]co[dot]uk (replacing at and dot with the symbols). There will be regular updates on this blog, so please “follow” this blog if you are interested.
